WHY YOU MUST START USING A LINE ON YOUR GOLF BALL?
This is most definitely one of the most powerful ways to instantly improve your putting without having to pay for a professional lesson. For major improvement you will need:
-
One permanent marker
-
Golf ball line device.
-
A line provides a point of reference for where the centre of the putter face should be in relation to the ball (which will increase the chances of striking better putts)
-
You can line your ball with the putt start line/ high point of break. This enables you to focus primarily on the pace of the putt.
-
Aim to get the line of the ball to roll end over end – This would be seen as a neutral putt which is unbiased when dropping into the hole.
Neutral putt – For example, if you create hook spin on your putts as a right-handed golfer you would have to allow for more break on right to left putts. Also, this would increase the speed of the putt increasing inconsistency with faster greens and downhill putts.
Having the line on your ball rolling end over end will enable you to focus on pace primarily as you’re able to subconsciously adapt your green reading as a result of hitting neutral putts.
So how do you putt a line on your ball?
You can buy a ‘Line em- up’. This is a plastic device which clips onto the golf ball enabling you to put a pure permanent sharpie line on the ball.
DO GOOD PUTTERS USE LINES?
Quite frankly, YES! There are numerous great golfers that use lines on their golf balls. TIGER WOODS! YES TIGER WOODS! Has used a line on his golf ball throughout most of his career. Likewise, Cam Smith who has had a blistering 2022 season uses a line on his golf ball too.
SO HOW DO YOU MAXIMISE USING THE LINE WHEN YOU HAVE ONE?
Line the ball up to your target, either the apex (high point) of the break or centre of the hole.
Put your putter in behind the golf ball and make sure the putter is aligned perfectly to the ball which is aligned to your target.
Build your set up around your pre well aligned putter.
THIS NOW MEANS YOUR AIMED PERFECTLY TO YOUR TARGET!
Hit a putt where the ball rolls end over end and you have given yourself the best chance of consistently holing putts.
BUT WAIT THERE!!! It’s not that easy, if it was easy everyone would do it.
There are some variables that you need to keep in mind:
-
Make sure that the line when aimed is vertical and not on a tilt.
-
Do not align the putter or build your set up if the ball isn’t aiming where you want it to.
-
Sighting the aim of the line will become harder the further away you are from the hole (you can use the grip of the putter to align from further away).
So, grab a marker and line device, and use this method! Let us know how you get on with this incredible method.
