St Pierre Golf Club is a highly regarded parkland golf course situated on the border of Chepstow in South Wales. There are two 18 hole golf courses at St Pierre. the Old Course and the Mathern, both of which provide a different test and experience. The Old course has held many great professional golf tournaments in its time like the Dunlop Masters where Seve Ballesteros played & The Solheim Cup.
The Old Course was a James Braid designed course which was designed in opened in 1962. This ageless course design sits amongst mature 400-year-old chestnuts trees, strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. When combined with the striped and manicured fairways and greens the Old course at St Pierre sets up for a picturesque experience able to challenge even the most experienced of players.
The old course offers variety which is one of its great selling points. The course offers long par 5s, fiddly and versatile par 4s and strong par 3s. 17 has a fantastic approach shot which is surrounded by a water hazard. Taking this shot on is not for the faint hearted.
The smaller sister course to the Old Course is named the Mathern Course, originally designed by architect Harry Colt and the Mathern opened in 1929. The Mathern course is a lot tighter of a golf course and also has smaller greens. The layout of the course is designed in modern times for golfers with less length and good accuracy. It could be argued that the Mathern is harder than the Old, due to it being so tight.
Similarly, to the Old Course, the Mathern has a variety of holes that require shot shaping, accuracy and ball control to successfully navigate around. This course requires so much imagination you will likely walk off the course both physically and mentally exercised.
In addition to two great golf courses, St Pierre Golf Club has a range of great facilities for members and guests. Facilities include: An 80-yard pitching and chipping area, an amazing driving range which is fairly priced and a MASSIVE putting green. The professional shop led by George Burnett is one of the most friendly and well stocked professional shops in the area.
St Pierre Golf Club is also renowned for hosting an assortment of functions such as weddings and gala’s. The huge clubhouse has the perfect courtyard to sit and watch other golfers finish their rounds on the most demanding hole on the course the 235 yard 18th.
In all, the St Pierre complex is a true gem of the Welsh countryside. Expect exceptional experiences and diverse challenges for golfers of all abilities when you visit the complex.
