The Celtic Manor was founded in 1980 by Sir Terry Matthews, a Welsh businessman that made his fortune in telecomes; Matthews was born in the ‘Manor House’ that was a maternity hospital before its conversion.
Best known for its three championship golf courses, The Manor lays claim to hosting the
2010 Ryder Cup, including a lineage of European Tour events in the form of The Wales Open. In 2014, the Celtic Manor also held A NATO summit - Here the most high-profile individuals within the political world gathered to discuss matters of importance.

The Courses
The Roman Road Course is the Celtic Manor’s most mature course. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1995. THe Roman Road is a parkland golf course that oversees Countryside, Mountains and the Bristol Channel, set amidst Roman Ruins: hence the name. The golf course itself is a great challenge for any handicap. It boasts large bunkers undulating greens and mature playing surfaces.

The Montgomerie Course is seen as the middle child of the Celtic Manor. Designedby Scottish European Tour veteran Colin Montgomerie, the course has a linksy feel but is set within a parkland setting. this course also helped in the Celtic’s bid to host the 2010 Ryder Cup as Montgomerie was the European Captain. The course is a personification of high risk - high reward. Many greens are reachable for players cutting corners who can hit the ball a fair distance when the course is dry in the summer. But you will need good lines and even better ball control. The deep linksy bunkers add great character to the course and increase the danger to those confident players looking to take their chances. The Montgomerie has held some well-known professional golf tournaments like a the EuroPro Tour event.

The Twenty Ten Course (2010) - designed for and named after the 2010 Ryder Cup is the resort's third and newest course. Built on former Marshland, situated next to the river Usk is arguably one of the best courses in the UK. Surrounded by water and built on top of the old Wentwood-Hills golf course. This purpose-built course has it all raised greens, with monstrous runoffs, deep bunkers and tight winding fairways. The match-play design can be seen throughout each hole. Celtic Manor 2010 also claims the largest Rolex clock in Europe situated on the clubhouse. The condition of the course improves for longer periods of time each year, but during peak summer the course can be found to be in 10/10 condition with the most magnificent of views.
As expected, some of the best golfers in History have visited the Celtic Manor from Tiger Woods to Arnold Palmer but not forgetting Justin Thomas and Mcilroy. The 2010 still holds the DP World Tour’s Wales Open each year where players compete for a winning prize fund of around 300,000 (Euro).
